Kerala utility seeks nod for thorium-based nuclear plant

The power utility in Kerala has requested permission from the central government to establish a thorium-based nuclear power plant in the state. The proposal suggests that the abundant thorium deposits in Kerala's coastal areas could provide a cost-effective solution for generating power. The state is exploring alternative energy sources to address power shortages, and one option is to use land near an existing NTPC unit for the proposed power plant. The proposal highlights the reduced risk of nuclear proliferation and waste management associated with thorium-based power generation.
